Doing an End Run

The dis-oriented author lives in Iowa. Iowa did not pass a constitutional amendment protecting traditional marriage. Iowa law however does define marriage as the union between a man and a woman. There is no real movement in Iowa to change the law since a majority of Iowans in both parties oppose homosexual marriage.

Even so, marriage in the heartland is under attack. This time the attack is coming from the courts.

Lambda Legal a homosexual advocacy group is pushing lawsuits in California, Washington, New York, New Jersey and Iowa. Lambda's strategy is to file suit on behalf of homosexual couples in the state and use the courts to win what they know would be impossible in the legislature or at the ballot box.

Unfortunately this strategy may work. The same strategy worked in Massachusetts and last year judges in Louisiana and Nebraska threw out constitutional amendments protecting marriage. The danger is real, an un-elected judge could overturn the law and  will of the people of Iowa.

Until we get a federal marriage protection amendment, it is up to the states. Now is the time for Iowa to pass a constitutional amendment declaring that marriage is a union of one man and one woman.
